Sugar Skull

For Halloween we got to experiment and work with our kits to produce a Sugar Skull.

A brief history behind sugar skulls is it originates from Mexico, it's the celebration of Day of the Dead. It focuses on family's and friends all getting together to celebrate and think about the people they have lost and support the spiritual journey.

My inspiration for my sugar skull was a male who is wearing the traditional male sugar skull and a make up tutorial I found on YouTube.

Health and Safety
- follow all health and safety precautions
- be really careful around the eyes with glitter as if it gets in the eye it could be uncomfortable for the model

What I used
- Illamasqua Matt primer
- Illamasqua skin base in white
- Illamasqua loose powder
- Kryolan Supra colours
- Kryolan brights palette
- Mac glitter pot in gold
- brushes
- spatulas
- cotton buds
- cleanser
- toner

What I did
1. I prepped the skin by cleansing and removing any dirt off the face and then I toned. I didn't moisturise because sometimes the make up can slide about the face and not stay.
2. I used the Illamasqua Matt primer and the skin base in white mixed together all over the face to a full white coverage.
3. Once I got the coverage I wanted and it was even I used the loose powder all over to set the base.
4. On the eyes I drew around the eye sockets and drew out where I wanted the dark parts to go. I then filled them in going over the eye brow in black and down the sides of the socked but not underneath the bottom lash line.
5. Once I had got the shape right I went round the tops and sides with a flat round brush to get the petal look.
6. On the eye lid and under the eye I applied a purple eyeshadow from the brights palette and blended it all together.
7. Once I got the blend I moved on to the cheeks. Using a pale brown colour I darkened the jaw line. Then I drew out the bones in the cheeks and the mouth line.
8. Before I started on the mouth o blotted purple shadow which I used on the eyes over the mouth.
9. Using the supra colour I filled in the bones, the mouth line and the teeth on the face
10. I got a fluffy blending brush and blended some dark around the jaw to define it some more and added a cross into the centre of the brows/forehead
11. Once I was happy with my design and it looked neat I added some glitter under neath the lash line going down on to the cheeks using a damp brush

Reflection
I was really happy with the outcome of my sugar skull design. It was different to what other people have produced and I wanted to be a little different. I also chose a male to be my model which isn't what anyone else has done.

I was happy with the White base and all the little details which I added to my design such as the purple blotted shadow behind the mouth and the cross on the forehead.

The only thing I am disappointed on is the glitter in the pictures doesn't look as effective as it should do in person.
Also if I had to do it again I would change the colour shadow I used to a green or blue to make it stand out much more.

Overall, I am very happy with my sugar skull, I enjoyed creating something like this and it was even more fun because it was close to Halloween.
I love the look I created and extra little bits I added from my inspiration pictures to create something different.
